During the holiday season most of us experience what I like to call being “holidazed”. The level of stress we experience can increase significantly during this time and can lead to exhaustion of the body systems -leaving us feeling anxious, fatigued and depleted and increasing our susceptibility to viruses etc.
A great way to counteract this over stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system is to employ restorative measures. Restorative relaxation is a form of yoga therapy that utilizes bolsters, blankets and other props to create a state of deep relaxation, where tension is released from the body on a physical level, and the mind completely switches off.
The relaxation response brings your system back into balance by deepening your breathing, reducing stress hormones, slowing down your heart rate and blood pressure, and relaxing your muscles.
The benefits of such a practice include boosting the immune system, lowering blood pressure, and relieving fatigue, anxiety and insomnia without medication. It contributes to an overall feeling of well-being and helps you uncover your natural clarity and peace of mind.
