Yes, we live in crazy, chaotic times and we can either jump into the fray or we can choose to remain grounded and calm within ourselves. Which do you choose? Some would say it depends…and I tend to agree to a certain extent. It depends on the circumstance, context and situation. Certainly, there are times when we get fired up and stand up for what we believe in, but it is quite another story if we go completely off the rails in doing so. It does not serve us well or our best interests when we play into the chaos creator’s agenda.
For me, it all comes back to awareness first and foremost. We need to become very aware of the activities that draw in, magnetize and amplify chaos. Once aware we can decide how we want to respond. We also need to become very aware of our triggers and find strategies we can employ to manage them. Triggers can often send us off the deep end when we are not aware of them. We tend to go into autopilot mode and become very reactionary. Especially if the charge we are experiencing is highly emotional. And the more people that get pulled into the chaos swirly, the more charged and crazy it gets…right?!
So, what can we do to stop the non-sense?! There are many avenues one can take. Explore and find what works best for you.
Here are a few thoughts to consider:
- Take a step back before it gets out of hand for you. Literally remove yourself from the situation. Give yourself a time-out to regain your inner calm and not become a bigger part of the problem. Time alone gives you an opportunity to slow down and re-examine what is happening. It is one way to push pause and reset.
- Go to your breath. Start to breathe slowly and deeply. Keeping your focus solely on your breath even for a couple of minutes will help you bring your nervous system into a more grounded state of being and you will not feel as “charged”. Once grounded, you are able to tap into your most inspired, creative, leadership energy.
- Keep your perspective. Know that some issues that seem incredibly important and urgent to someone else may not be the same for you. Be aware that just because they spin out of control over something doesn’t mean you have to. Assess the situation and decide where you want to spend your energy and WHO you want to be in the situation. You just may be the voice of reason and calming force that someone else needs.
- Smile. Yes, I said smile. I say this all the time to my yoga students. Smiling has an immediate effect on the energy we carry. An automatic softening occurs in the areas that feel tense. Because as we know, chaos causes tension.
- Ask for help. More often than not, we tend to take on too many things at once which in turn creates its own form of chaos.
- Be sure to keep self-care a priority. Eating right, exercising, getting enough sleep, having enough alone time are all the things we need to not only stay in good mental, emotional and physical health, but to build the resilience we need to manage chaos.
When we are calm, grounded and centered, everything we do feels fully supported. We are in control of our emotions. We can hear our own thoughts. We are in our most inspired, creative, empowered energy. We enjoy life! And who doesn’t want that?!
