Personal Power: What is it and how CAN I get me some?

This month I am focusing on the 3rd chakra – our energetic “power” action center and it got me thinking about the word power and what it means.

There are several definitions for power depending on whether it is used as a noun or a verb. And when we think of power in the context of a person there can be a tendency to see power as a negative term. Power as in a power-hungry person – someone who is not in touch with anything else but how to get power and how to keep power.  The type of power that is used to manipulate, coerce or dominant others.

Most of us at some point in our lives will experience someone who falls into this power paradigm. It could even be ourselves at times – right? Ugh. Not so pretty.

However, when I think of personal power, I think of my personal growth as a being – ever evolving into the highest version of myself. It’s the type of power that represents self-development & self-realization.  It is the mastery of self in strength, confidence, courage and love. A natural, healthy striving for meaning in one’s life.

And it is more than just an attitude or state of mind. It is based on competence, vision, positive personal qualities, and service. It shows up as being more generous, creative and humane than other forms of power. It means that we are grounded in ourselves, we are in touch with our emotions and can express ourselves in a very mature way. We don’t use shame, guilt, anger or fear to get what we want out of life.

So how does one master this kind of personal power?  Practice, practice, practice! First, we need to see and acknowledge the areas that need polishing in ourselves. Awareness is always the first step.  After that comes a variety of choices & tools to enable positive growth such as working with a coach or therapist, practicing yoga & meditation, journaling, tapping etc. And finally, we need to have a strong desire to make positive changes within ourselves. Once we master these (with lots of practice) we come into our being with the utmost peace, joy, lightness and satisfaction.  We bring our best self to each situation – we are resilient against any “wind” that could blow us over.

Strong and powerful for the highest good of me, of you, of everyone & everything. Nuff said…Namasté.
